Your Choir Deserves Better Than Photocopied Hymn Sheets

Photocopies tear, go missing and never have the verse you need. How Shona Catholic choirs are moving to a free offline hymn lyrics app for practice and Sunday Mass.
Every choir has the same drawer. Folded photocopies, three generations of toner, half of them missing verse four.
It works. Barely. And it quietly costs you every single week.
The real cost of paper
| Problem | What it costs the choir |
|---|---|
| Sheets go missing | Ten minutes of practice lost, every practice |
| Only one master copy | New members cannot rehearse at home |
| Photocopying budget | Money that could buy a microphone |
| Wrong or partial verses | The congregation drops out mid-hymn |
| Nothing is searchable | “Which hymn was that again?” |
A hymn book everyone already carries
Nobody in your choir forgets their phone. That is the entire argument.
Harmony of Saints is a free Android app with Shona Catholic hymn lyrics, prayers and saint guides. Searchable. Offline. No account. Every member has the same words in front of them, at practice and at Mass.

How to roll it out in one practice
- Ten minutes before rehearsal: everyone installs it while you set up.
- Agree the list: read out Sunday’s hymn titles so everyone searches and finds them once.
- Practise from the app, not paper — one rehearsal is enough to break the habit.
- Set a phone rule: screens dimmed, silent, in-app only during Mass. Say it once, out loud.
- Keep three paper copies for members who prefer them. Do not force anyone.
Objections worth taking seriously
“Phones in church are disrespectful.” A phone showing a hymn is a hymn book. A phone showing WhatsApp is not. The rule is behaviour, not hardware.
“Older members will struggle.” Some will. Pair each of them with a younger member for two weeks, and keep paper for anyone who wants it.
“There is no signal in the church.” Good — the app works offline.
“Batteries die.” True. Keep a small backup set of printouts for the leader.
What changes after a month
Practice starts on time. New members learn faster because they can rehearse in the kombi. The congregation sings verse four, because for the first time everyone has verse four.
