Best Payment Gateways in South Africa 2026: Payfast vs Yoco vs Peach vs Stripe

Definitive 2026 SA payment gateway guide: Payfast, Yoco, Peach, Stripe, Paystack, Ozow, SnapScan — fees, settlement, recurring billing & POPIA.

Picking the right payment gateway in South Africa decides whether 4% or 14% of your checkouts abandon. In 2026 the playing field includes Payfast, Yoco Online, Peach Payments, Stitch, Ozow, and the rapidly growing PayShap instant EFT.

The 2026 South African payments landscape

Card payments still dominate at 62% of online transactions, but instant EFT (PayShap, Ozow, Stitch) has jumped to 24% — up from 9% in 2024. SnapScan and Zapper QR sit around 8%, with the rest split between Apple Pay, Google Pay and Bitcoin (yes, really, mostly via Luno Pay).

Payfast — the incumbent

Fees: 3.5% + R2 per transaction (cards), 2% (instant EFT). No monthly fee. Settlement: 2 business days.

Payfast is the default for most WooCommerce and Shopify stores. It supports cards, EFT, SnapScan, Zapper, Mobicred and Masterpass. The downside is the checkout UI feels dated and the API documentation is patchy compared to Stitch.

Peach Payments — best for scaling brands

Fees: Negotiable from 2.85% at volume. Monthly: R0–R350. Settlement: T+1.

Peach offers a hosted checkout, embedded forms, and recurring billing. Their tokenisation is excellent for subscription businesses, and they have native Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and custom API options. Used by Takealot, Superbalist and most major SA e-commerce.

Stitch — best developer experience

Fees: From 1.7% (PayByBank) to 2.9% (cards). API-first.

Stitch built the cleanest payments API in South Africa. Their PayByBank product (instant EFT with one-click bank login) converts 18% better than traditional EFT. If you have a developer team, this is the modern choice.

Ozow & PayShap — instant EFT

Ozow charges flat R3 or 1.5% (whichever is lower) — unbeatable for high-value baskets. PayShap is the SARB-backed instant clearing system, now supported by all major banks. Add at least one to your checkout — it lifts conversion 8–12% for users without credit cards.

Yoco Online — best for existing Yoco merchants

If you already use Yoco in-store, their online gateway gives you one dashboard, one settlement, one set of reports. Fees: 2.95% online. Setup is 30 minutes via the Yoco app.

Hidden costs to watch

  • Chargeback fees: R150–R350 per dispute.
  • Refund fees: Some gateways don't refund the original transaction fee.
  • FX margin: 2–4% on USD/EUR transactions if you sell internationally.
  • 3D Secure friction: Required by SARB but kills conversion if poorly implemented.

My 2026 recommendation

For a new SA e-commerce store: Peach Payments + Ozow. Peach for cards (best UX), Ozow for instant EFT (cheapest fees). Total integration: one weekend. Expected checkout completion lift over Payfast-only: 11%.
