Best Web Developer in Cape Town: What to Look For in 2026

How to choose the best web developer in Cape Town in 2026: what to check, what a good site costs in Rands, warning signs, and the questions to ask before you pay.

Best Web Developer in Cape Town: What to Look For in 2026

There is no single best web developer in Cape Town, and any page claiming otherwise is selling something. There is a best developer for your situation — and the difference between the two is the reason so many businesses pay twice for the same website.

This is how to tell them apart before you transfer a deposit.

Start with the brief, not the developer

Most bad outcomes trace back to a vague brief. Before you contact anyone, write down four things:

  • The job the site must do. Take bookings? Generate enquiries? Sell 40 products? Look credible to funders? These are different builds.
  • Who updates it afterwards — you, a staff member, or the developer on retainer.
  • Your realistic budget range, including the year-one running costs.
  • How you will judge success in six months: enquiries per month, bookings, ranking for a specific phrase.

A developer who reads that and asks harder questions is the one to hire. A developer who immediately quotes a price is quoting for a template.

What to check on a portfolio

  1. Open three live sites they built — live URLs, not Dribbble mockups.
  2. Run each through PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Under 80 on mobile is a warning; South African visitors are on phones and mobile data.
  3. Search the client's business name. Does the site rank first for it? If not, the basics were skipped.
  4. Check whether the sites are still live. Portfolios full of dead links mean clients left.
  5. Phone one reference. Ask what happened after launch — that is where relationships fail.

Warning signs

  • They will not tell you what platform they use. Vagueness here usually means a page builder you will be locked into.
  • The domain and hosting go in their name. Non-negotiable: both accounts must be yours. This is the most common way South African businesses get held hostage.
  • No mention of SEO structure — page titles, headings, a sitemap, a page per service. Retrofitting this costs more than doing it once.
  • A quote with no scope. "R15 000 for a website" without a page list is an argument scheduled for week three.
  • No post-launch plan. Ask who fixes a broken contact form in month four, and what it costs.

Six questions to ask before you pay

  1. Who owns the domain, the hosting account and the code when we are done?
  2. What exactly is in scope — how many pages, how many revision rounds?
  3. Can I edit content myself, and will you show me how?
  4. What is the mobile performance target, and will you show me the score at handover?
  5. What happens if the site breaks in month six, and what does that cost?
  6. Which three live sites like mine have you built?

Freelancer, agency, or in-house?

A good Cape Town freelancer gives you direct access to the person building it and lower overhead — the right choice for most SMEs. An agency gives you continuity and a bigger team, at roughly double the rate. Full comparison in freelance developer vs agency in South Africa.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a small business website cost in Cape Town?

R14 000 to R30 000 for a proper 5–8 page site with SEO structure, mobile performance and a contact system that actually delivers email. Below R5 000 you are buying a template someone filled in.

How long does it take?

Two to four weeks for a standard business site. Delays are almost always content — photos, copy and approvals — so prepare those first.

Should I hire local or overseas?

Local matters when your customers are local: suburb-level SEO, Rand pricing, South African payment gateways and being reachable in your time zone. For a purely international product, geography matters less.
